Saturday Morning Andrew's 7-12 Class- Week 5

Great class this week. We actually began with production this week- kudos to the students who were memorized this week. All students must be "off-book"/memorized by this upcoming weekend. We primarily worked on finishing/re-enforcing the blocking of the scenes/monologues. Additionally, I worked with a lot of the students on having a better sense of place work in their scenes/monologues- especially what is right in front of them (the fourth wall). When the actor has a strong sense of place they will not feel the need to always be looking at their scene partner- or the ground. NOTE: Students need to bring designated props to class next week.

Technique went wonderfully! We began with improv/scene work where the students break off into groups and are given the task of creating a sense out of a place suggestion. The big technique exercise we spent most of the day on was object work. Students were to think about a meaningful object (or pet) that they had/have and then recreate it on the stage using the five senses. Their work was really wonderful- the object work brought out all kinds of emotions. Moreover, the students attention to detail was wonderful as they went very slowly in exploring each of the details to make the whole thing come alive. I also added prior circumstance for some of the students doing the object work- this combination took the work further in many cases. But again- it was wonderful to watch and I think we made a lot of breakthroughs this past week. We finished the day with a fun improv exercise called "What are You Doing?"- which encourages spontaneity, and making big commitments to your choices. NOTEL Students need to bring 3 objects that are meaningful for them to class next week.
